Best Street Markets In France

Isn’t it infuriating to arrive in a French town expecting to buy the makings of a picnic or to stock your gîte larder only to discover that the market was yesterday?

This series of guide books is here to help resolve your dilemma. It is devoted entirely to making it easy for you to find and enjoy the very best markets – starting with the coastal regions of northern France.

Why French Street Markets?

Because they are endlessly fascinating: they are so much more than just fruit and vegetables. They vary seasonally and regionally; they change over time to meet new demands. Strolling around French markets is one of the most engaging of pastimes. You don’t even need to buy anything - the special atmosphere is free - although the temptation is great! Some markets positively buzz with vitality, others are spectacular either in location or in the range of goods on offer;

Because they are sociable: friends and neighbours greeting each other and having a gossip; groups of teenagers looking out for the latest fad or fashion; and farmers and gardeners using their stalls of home grown produce as a weekly excuse for an outing to town;

Because they are full of surprises: a stall devoted entirely to carpets; an elegant pendant that doesn’t cost the earth; a wonderful display of flowers, and everything for the keen gardener. Then there is the repeated pleasure of beautifully displayed food - rosy radishes, strings of dried sausages and wonderful cheeses, to mention but a few.

The authors – Margaret Anderson and Rosemary Fennell – have been enjoying French street markets since 1976. They are delighted to be able to share their enthusiasm with other lovers of French lifestyle.
